How to read your credit report without the overwhelm

A practical guide to personal details, accounts, inquiries, and the three bureaus.

Start with the full picture

Request your reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Save each report somewhere private and note which bureau issued it. A credit report and credit score are different products.

Work through one section at a time

Check personal information, account ownership, balances, payment history, and inquiries. Write down questions rather than assuming an unfamiliar entry is an error.

Compare across bureaus

Businesses may report to different bureaus at different times. Compare details and investigate discrepancies using statements or other records.

CFPB: Credit reports and scores
